Pilates helps one gain long, lean muscles. More conventional or traditional workouts are weight bearing and tend to build short, bulky muscles – the type most prone to injury. Pilates creates an evenly conditioned body and improves sports performance while helping to prevent injuries. Traditional conventional workouts tend to work the same muscles. This leads weak muscles tend to get weaker and strong muscles tend to get stronger. The result is muscular imbalance – a primary cause of injury and chronic back pain. Pilates conditions the whole body, even the ankles and feet. No muscle group is over trained or under trained. Your entire musculature is evenly balanced and conditioned.

Spring into Action with Pilates

As Spring appears, one often looks to find a sense of refreshment and renewal. Thoughts of spring cleaning come to mind. What about spring cleaning your body? Pilates works the body like no other exercise, leaving one with a sense of having had a complete body workout, a feeling of empowerment and renewed vigor and energy. In February, thoughts turn to love and how to honor our loved ones. It is also a time to reflect on heart health. Consider the benefits of Pilates exercise. The objective of the Pilates regimen is to achieve a balance between flexibility and strength; increasing muscle size is not a goal. In developing his method, Joseph Pilates emphasized “Contrology” or the science and art of coordinated body-mind-spirit development through natural movements. Joe combined the eastern approach to exercise (calmness, centeredness) with the western approach (motion, muscle tone and strength) to develop what he considered the ultimate form of fitness: exercise that cultivates power and grace. Joe Pilates also designed various apparatuses to accommodate the hundreds of exercises he developed over time.

Some of the principles that guide the Pilates method include concentration on each movement, use of the abdominal and back muscles, flowing movement patterns that are precise and not jerky and a steady and controlled breathing. Depending on the exercise, Pilates routines can be performed on specially-designed apparatuses or on a mat. In addition to its ability to build physical strength and improve flexibility, the Pilates method has been credited with helping to strengthen the immune system, decrease stress and alleviate body ailments like back or neck pain. Performed correctly (and at least initially, under the supervision of a Certified Pilates instructor), the Pilates exercises are safe for adults, seniors, pregnant women and children.

Pilates and Heart Disease Prevention

The best type of exercise for primary and secondary prevention of heart disease is aerobic exercise. Although the Pilates system is not considered to be aerobic in nature, it is an excellent adjunct to a regular aerobic program (such as walking, cycling, or swimming). In particular, its potential stress reduction features promotes long term heart health.

Get Back on Track with Pilates

The holiday frenzy often takes one off a regular exercise regimen. Have you heard about Pilates but never knew what the hype was about? Our studio is hosting the Pilates film documentary “A Movement of Movement” by filmmaker Mark Pedri on Friday, January 17, 2014. The film is appropriate for Pilates enthusiasts or anyone interested in Pilates and movement. The following day, Saturday, January 18, 2014, the studio will be offering three classes / workshops taught by Benjamin Degenhardt. Benjamin is the creator of 360° Pilates, an education program designed to reconnect movement teachers of all training backgrounds with the original teachings and guiding principles of Joe Pilates. Joining Benjamin on the Contrology (Pilates) History Workshop will be IC (Chuck) Rapoport. Chuck, currently a retired photojournalist, worked for many publications from 1959 through 1972. His published photo-essays and photographs appeared in numerous issues of LIFE magazine and PARIS-MATCH. Chuck will share the day in 1961 he spent photographing Joseph Pilates.

Starting at 11:00am -12:15pm – 360° Pilates Mat Class – Ex­plore the original Mat exercise repertoire and progressions to the lesser known archival and standing exercises by Joe Pilates. Fol­lowing at 12:30pm – 2:15pm will be (Free w/ purchase of Mat or Reformer Workshop) Contrology History by Benjamin (with Chuck). As the original work further evolves and diversifies, and histori­cal information continues to resurface, enthusiasts of the Pilates method have the exciting opportunity to familiarize themselves with the thought-process that went into the making of Contrology (Pilates). The last workshop of the day will be 2:30pm – 5:30pm – “The Universal Reformer” Workshop (for experienced Pilates Reformer enthusiasts). The Universal Reformer was designed as a tool to teach the body how to move better – on the Mat, and in everyday life. Its design and engineering feeds and facilitates ideal support and resistance for the Pilates vocabulary.
