Pilates has for a long time been the preferred workout for Hollywood stars, professional and Olympic athletes for cross training purposes and non-athletes throughout the world. Pilates is in the forefront of proven exercise regimens and not a fad. Pilates exercise (originally called Contrology) was created in the early 1900’s by Joseph Pilates, who was born in Germany and moved to the U.S. in 1926. Joe created his exercise system based on gymnastics and the physical culture found in Europe at the time. He invented and patented several pieces of equipment, all are which a part of the entire exercise system. To experience the entire exercise system, one performs exercise on all of the equipment he developed – the Universal Reformer, Cadillac / Tower, Chairs (there are multiple Chairs including Arm Chair, Wunda Chair), Pedi-Pole, Ladder Barrel, Step Barrel / Spine Corrector, Magic Circle and Mat. The equipment has springs, which offer resistance and assistance depending on the exercise to be performed.

Suncoast Pilates is a fully equipped Pilates studio, where a client will experience all of the equipment designed by Joe in his exercise regimen. To learn Pilates exercise, it is recommended to work with a trained, Certified, experienced Pilates instructor who has taken a minimum of 480 hours of training. Suncoast Pilates has some of the Tampa Bay area’s most highly training, experienced Pilates instructors. The studio has a variety of programs to fit your time, budget and needs. Private training is initially recommended. Suncoast Pilates offers Pilates instruction six days a week, from early morning through late evening. Get Fit with Pilates

As the weather warms up, tanks, shorts, t-shirts and swimsuits appear. Do you feel good in your clothes? Do you feel fit? Are you energized or are you fatigued? Want a workout regimen that leaves you feeling better in your clothes, makes you feel fitter and energizes you all at the same time? Pilates exercise can and does do all that plus more. Pilates can improve posture, strengthen the back, increase flexibility and range of motion and help prevent injuries. Pilates exercise can be done on the floor at your home, office or just about anywhere. Pilates is also a system, utilizing floor or what is called Mat exercises as well as incorporating specialized equipment including the Reformer, Cadillac / Tower, Chair, Barrels and other small pieces of equipment designed by Joseph Pilates. Pilates incorporates breath into movement that moves the spine in all directions (flexion, extension, rotation and lateral flexion) and exercises in all planes and positions (lying, kneeling, sitting, standing). Pilates equipment utilizes spring resistance which gives assistance or resistance, depending on the goal of a particular exercise.

Pilates helps one gain long, lean muscles. More conventional or traditional workouts are weight bearing and tend to build short, bulky muscles – the type most prone to injury. Pilates elongates and strengthens, improving muscle elasticity and joint mobility. A body with balanced strength and flexibility is less likely to be injured. Pilates creates an evenly conditioned body and improves sports performance while helping to prevent injuries. Traditional conventional workouts tend to work the same muscles. This leads weak muscles tend to get weaker and strong muscles tend to get stronger. The result is muscular imbalance – a primary cause of injury and chronic back pain. Pilates conditions the whole body, even the ankles and feet. No muscle group is over trained or under trained. Your entire musculature is evenly balanced and conditioned.

If one is seeking to do Pilates, work with a Certified Pilates Instructor, who has taken a minimum of a 480 hour comprehensive training program and is experienced. Suncoast Pilates has some of the Tampa Bay area’s most experienced and highly trained Pilates instructors. Come get fit at Suncoast Pilates.

Spring into Action with Pilates

As Spring appears, one often looks to find a sense of refreshment and renewal. Thoughts of spring cleaning come to mind. What about spring cleaning your body? Pilates works the body like no other exercise, leaving one with a sense of having had a complete body workout, a feeling of empowerment and renewed vigor and energy. After a Pilates workout, one feels strengthened and stretched at the same time, powerful yet relaxed in mind, body and spirit. The Pilates exercise method further increases endurance and improves both balance and posture.

Pilates can be performed on the floor anywhere with what is called Pilates Mat exercises. Pilates is a complete system of exercise, of which the equipment developed by Joseph Pilates is a key part. Joe developed his equipment and exercise method in the early 1900’s and originally called it Contrology. Much of the equipment he created has springs, with one experiencing both resistance and the oppositional pull to springs. Pilates exercises include moving the spine in all directions – flexion, extension, lateral flexion and rotation, working the body fully in each session. The arms, legs, back, abdominals, thighs, quadriceps, hamstrings, gluteal muscles and hips all are worked each and every session. Exercises performed on the Reformer, Tower, Cadillac, Chair, Ladder Barrel and other pieces of Pilates equipment are performed lying, kneeling, sitting, standing and side lying.

Fitness fads come and go, but the Pilates exercise method has been around for over 90 years. This method has stood the test of time and has shown effectiveness for almost a decade. Pilates is appropriate for the beginning exerciser as well as the seasoned athlete, and has for years been part of celebrity workouts and part of conditioning programs for Olympic athletes.

To properly learn Pilates exercise, it is recommended that one works with an experienced, well trained, Certified Pilates instructor, who has completed a comprehensive Pilates training and certification program. Suncoast Pilates was the area’s first Pilates studio, opened in 1997, and has some of the Tampa Bay area’s most highly trained and experienced Pilates teachers. The studio has worked with hundreds of individuals, bringing clients to a higher fitness level and a slimmer, more toned physique. What are you waiting for? Spring your body into action by booking an introductory Pilates session today!

In addition to her studio and film work, Ms. Galliano has traveled the world helping to sculpt the bodies of celebrity clients such as Madonna, Sting, Uma Thurman, Cameron Diaz, Carrie-Anne Moss and Jessica Lange.

A protégé of Romana Kryzanowska, the Master Pilates teacher who was trained by Joe Pilates, Ms. Galliano is also certified in Kundalini yoga by Yogi Bhajan. ”She is a brilliant teacher”, shared Ms. Kryzanowska, and “one of my favorite people in the world”.

Ms. Galliano’s unique approach to fitness brings students an awareness of Pilates techniques and health traditions regardless of their age or physical condition. Her instruction incorporates a combination of focus, joy and a refreshing sense of humor. Famed for getting tangible results, she is one of the most sought-after experts on Pilates, and has been featured on television and in several major magazines, entertaining and informing audiences with her passionate views.

In May, Ms. Galliano will be visiting Suncoast Pilates and offering two days of workshops as well as two days of private and duet Pilates sessions. In her two days of workshops, geared toward Pilates instructors, she states “people just become better teachers after a workshop. They see, touch, cue, and choose differently. They get inspired and love teaching more. It’s about their bodies, and their clients, but the emphasis is always about a bigger picture, of the complete System; that Pilates is a system, not just the Reformer or Mat or Chair or Cadillac. The smaller things are important, the foot corrector and pedipole and armchair, especially for the older and injured population.” She will be sharing Pilates training secrets used to train the stars as well as healthy and injured bodies. Ms. Galliano will be offering two full days of Pilates private and duet sessions for Pilates clients and instructors.

Suncoast Pilates is the area’s first Pilates studio, serving North Pinellas since 1997. The studio specializes in private, duet and group Pilates equipment sessions and Pilates Mat sessions. Suncoast Pilates is also a Pilates instructor training facility and is renowned for offering the highest quality in Pilates continuing education and workshops. Train where Pilates instructors train to be teachers.

<3 Pilates

In February, thoughts turn to love and how to honor our loved ones. It is also a time to reflect on heart health. Consider the benefits of Pilates exercise. The objective of the Pilates regimen is to achieve a balance between flexibility and strength; increasing muscle size is not a goal. In developing his method, Joseph Pilates emphasized “Contrology” or the science and art of coordinated body-mind-spirit development through natural movements. Joe combined the eastern approach to exercise (calmness, centeredness) with the western approach (motion, muscle tone and strength) to develop what he considered the ultimate form of fitness: exercise that cultivates power and grace. Joe Pilates also designed various apparatuses to accommodate the hundreds of exercises he developed over time.

Some of the principles that guide the Pilates method include concentration on each movement, use of the abdominal and back muscles, flowing movement patterns that are precise and not jerky and a steady and controlled breathing. Depending on the exercise, Pilates routines can be performed on specially-designed apparatuses or on a mat. In addition to its ability to build physical strength and improve flexibility, the Pilates method has been credited with helping to strengthen the immune system, decrease stress and alleviate body ailments like back or neck pain. Performed correctly (and at least initially, under the supervision of a Certified Pilates instructor), the Pilates exercises are safe for adults, seniors, pregnant women and children.

Pilates and Heart Disease Prevention

The best type of exercise for primary and secondary prevention of heart disease is aerobic exercise. Although the Pilates system is not considered to be aerobic in nature, it is an excellent adjunct to a regular aerobic program (such as walking, cycling, or swimming). In particular, its potential stress reduction features promotes long term heart health.

Other Pilates benefits are:

  • Improves balance, coordination and circulation
  • Improves performance in sports (e.g., golf, skiing, skating, dance)
  • Streamlines and lengthens the body
  • Improves postural problems; can alleviate back pain
  • Increases core strength/stability and peripheral mobility
  • Helps prevent injury
  • Enhances ease of movement
  • Balances strength and flexibility
  • Heightens body awareness
  • Can be customized for a broad range of fitness and ability levels, from post-rehab patients (including cardiac rehab patients) to elite athletes
  • Strengthens the immune system

Consider giving the gift of health to a loved one – give a present of Pilates exercise to another or to yourself.

Get Back on Track with Pilates

The holiday frenzy often takes one off a regular exercise regimen. To get back on track, turn to an exercise regimen that engages you, makes you feel worked out yet energized, and that makes one feel strengthened yet lengthened. Get a new you through Pilates exercise!  To kick off the New Year right, Suncoast Pilates will be offering a full weekend to immerse oneself in Pilates. Benjamin is the creator of 360° Pilates, an education program designed to reconnect movement teachers of all training backgrounds with the original teachings and guiding principles of Joe Pilates. Joining Benjamin on the Contrology (Pilates) History Workshop will be IC (Chuck) Rapoport. Chuck, currently a retired photojournalist, worked for many publications from 1959 through 1972. His published photo-essays and photographs appeared in numerous issues of LIFE magazine and PARIS-MATCH. Chuck will share the day in 1961 he spent photographing Joseph Pilates.

Starting at 11:00am -12:15pm – 360° Pilates Mat Class – Explore the original Mat exercise repertoire and progressions to the lesser known archival and standing exercises by Joe Pilates. Following at 12:30pm – 2:15pm will be (Free w/ purchase of Mat or Reformer Workshop) Contrology History by Benjamin (with Chuck). As the original work further evolves and diversifies, and historical information continues to resurface, enthusiasts of the Pilates method have the exciting opportunity to familiarize themselves with the thought-process that went into the making of Contrology (Pilates). The last workshop of the day will be 2:30pm – 5:30pm – “The Universal Reformer” Workshop (for experienced Pilates Reformer enthusiasts). The Universal Reformer was designed as a tool to teach the body how to move better – on the Mat, and in everyday life. Its design and engineering feeds and facilitates ideal support and resistance for the Pilates vocabulary.

Never tried Pilates? Come into Suncoast Pilates and check us out! Call our studio or check out our website for information today. And join us January 17 in celebrating “A Movement of Movement”.

Thankful for Health

As each year passes and Thanksgiving approaches, one becomes reflective of all the things for which to be thankful. One of the foremost is to be thankful of one’s health and the health of family, friends and loved ones. When younger, one may not appreciate the intricacy of the human body and how efficiently it works. In times of old, humans worked out without even knowing or thinking about “exercising” in order to forage for food, to walk to get from one place to another or even to run in response to being chased by wild animals. With technology, Americans in particular assert less and less effort to do activities. Our bodies actually need to be fit (remember the old adage “Use It or Lose It” really does apply). Americans each year as a whole are gaining weight, experiencing higher blood pressure and cholesterol, are less fit and experience higher stress levels. And yes, there is no magic pill to control it all……but regular exercise can be the best remedy of all.

Pilates is one of the most effective exercise systems to work the entire body. Pilates offers resistance training on the equipment, providing assistance as well as resistance. Pilates Mat (floor) training uses the resistance of one’s own body weight. The Pilates method, originally called Contrology and created by Joseph Pilates, is a physical movement program designed to stretch, strengthen and balance the body without adding bulk. Pilates exercises focuses on postural symmetry, breath control, abdominal strength, spine, pelvic and shoulder stabilization, muscular flexibility, joint mobility and strengthening through the complete range of motion of all joints. Instead of isolating muscles groups, the whole body is trained. Pilates can help dramatically change your body. And, yes, Pilates is for men too. Pilates was originally created by a man for men! Joe Pilates stated it best when it comes to being fit. Below are quotes from Joseph Pilates’ book, Return to Life Through Contrology.

CoreAlign® Part Strength, Part Cardio, Part Mind / Body – All Core

CoreAlign-trioAs does Pilates, the CoreAlign® offers a complete full body workout. The CoreAlign® is a relatively new and unique apparatus and methodology developed originally in a physical therapy setting to bridge the gap between rehabilitation and functional fitness. It is designed to challenge and enhance the basic foundations of movement we use in everyday life and to enable natural free flowing full body exercises with independent limb training. The independent movement of each cart challenges bipedal motion unlike anything else in the fitness industry. Adaptable to all levels of fitness it is equally appropriate for musculoskeletal rehabilitation, athletic performance enhancement, or as a regular exercise program for a healthy lifestyle. The CoreAlign design is a wood frame which encloses two steel tracks each with a rolling cart. It uses elastic resistance tubing to apply either resistance or assistance at full range of levels from very light to extremely heavy. The unit faces a wall mounted ladder used to assist with balance and to expand exercise potential of this very open ended system. The CoreAlign® has the unique ability to stimulate the core stability muscles while you perform challenging exercises, deep stretches, and core controlled aerobic activity. It is also an excellent low-no impact, weight bearing exercise for those concerned with bone density issues. You will improve your posture, fine tune your balance, work up a sweat, and have fun doing it! The CoreAlign will challenge strength and alignment in a standing position from basic movement to highly integrated sport training.

Suncoast Pilates prides itself on being at the fore-front of the Pilates industry in the Tampa Bay area, and was the first Pilates studio in North Pinellas, opened in 1997. All of our instructors are Balanced Body Pilates Comprehensively Trained Instructors and all have been trained to instruct clients on the CoreAlign in private, duet and trio sessions. The studio has been offering client CoreAlign® instruction since 2010 and has hosted CoreAlign® instructor training each and every year since, bringing in the developer of the CoreAlign® Jonathan Hoffman to teach instructors. Suncoast Pilates has also been a Balanced Body Pilates Comprehensive Instructor training facility and continues to produce some of the finest Pilates instructors in the Tampa Bay area. Suncoast instructors plan an effective training program with a complete Pilates training program and incorporating the CoreAlign® which also utilizes Pilates principles.

Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900’s and has been proven to be an effective exercise program for almost 100 years.
